Lawrence Larry R. Abbott, 88 years of age, of South Weymouth passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the South Shore Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Rockland. Larry was born in Braintree and graduated from Braintree High School. He had been a longtime South Weymouth resident. He was a Navy veteran of 22 years having served in World War II, the Korean conflict, and the Vietnam era. He served with the occupation forces in Japan at the end of WWII. In civilian life, he had been a machinist for Grant Gear Works in Norwood for 20 years before his retirement. Larry belonged to the Weymouth United Masonic Lodge which recently presented to him his 50 year medal for his membership. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, the Commandery, the Aleppo Temple Shrine, and the Shedad Grotto. He was also a life member of the Order of Eastern Star Wessagussett Chapter-Mayflower Chapter. Larry belonged to the Fleet Reserve Association and he had been a member of the Weymouth United Methodist Church where he participated in the church coffee hour on Tuesdays for many years. He was the beloved husband of the late Janet C. (Wyman) Abbott who died in 2007 and Hilda M. (Tatro) Abbott who died in 1992. He was the devoted father of the Rev. David W. Abbott married to Dolly Abbott of Stark, N.H., Robert W. Abbott of Hanford, Calif., who was married to the late Carole (Bickel) Abbott, and Merle Jean (Abbott) Esdale married to Donald Esdale of South Weymouth and Rockland. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and one great great-granddaughter. Visiting hours will be held at the Mortimer N. Peck-Russell Peck Funeral Home, 516 Washington Street, Braintree, Monday, May 19, from 4-8 pm. There will be a Masonic Service Monday evening at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted by his son, Rev. David W. Abbott at the funeral home Tuesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
