He was the son of Gardner C. and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Baccus) Abbott. His parents were married in Jackson, Ohio on October 10, 1855. His brother Frank, about 8 years younger, died in Spokane on November 21, 1919. His sister Luella Eagles Godfrey, born March 28, 1868, died in Centralia, Lewis County, Washington on March 14, 1942.

He was the husband of Charlotte Hackett, born in England and the daughter of William Hackett. They married in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana on October 23, 1887. They had two sons and one daughter in Montana, before moving to Utah. His wife and children survived him and continued to live in Spokane, at least for some years after his death. Their eldest son, Albert E. Abbott, died in Spokane in February 10, 1949.
