Second Lieutenant Ryan Christopher Yancey, 27, of Midlothian, Virginia, died on Friday, August 24, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John H. Yancey.
He is survived by his mother, Robin Brown Yancey of Charlottesville, Virginia; his father, CSM Thomas H. Yancey and his wife, Phyllis, of Columbia, Virginia; three brothers, Dustin Yancey, Robert Barclay and Christopher Barclay; his grandparents, Douglas and Carolyn Bess and Walter and Beverly Brown and a great-uncle, Raymond Yancey and his wife, Noel. Ryan also leaves behind many family members and friends too numerous to mention.
Second Lieutenant Ryan Christopher Yancey served for over nine years as an enlisted solder and as an Officer in the Virginia Army National Guard. He was first assigned as a Paralegal Specialist for the 224th Aviation Battalion. Subsequently, he reclassified to the Human Resources career field and performed duties as an HR Sergeant in the Division G1 and Executive Administrative Assistant for the Chief of Staff of the 29th Infantry Division. Second Lieutenant Yancey deployed twice to serve in combat zones, first with 2nd Battalion 224th Aviation to Iraq from 2007 until 2008 during the Iraqi Surge Campaign and second with the 29th Infantry Division's Tactical Command post to Afghanistan from 2010 until 2011. In August 2011, he graduated from College of Mount Saint Joseph, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Paralegal/JAG Studies.
Second Lieutenant Yancey was also a life member of VFW 2613 and Beaver Dam Baptist Church as well as serving as a Free Mason. Ryan loved his family, life and his country. A visitation was held at Sheridan Funeral Home in Kents Store, Virginia. Funeral services were held at Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Troy, Virginia, with the Reverend Greg Wissinger and Chaplin (Major) Ben Sprouse of the 116th IBCT officiating. Interment followed with full military honors at Lyles Baptist Church Cemetery in Palmyra, Virginia.
