|Death: ||Jun. 2, 1925|
Although her name is spelled a bit differently on her marker, we put the more conventional spelling so she can be found - it took me days to find her under this spelling. Her birth date engraved here is about three years off, for she was already 2 in the 1860 census. The informant on her death certificate also was in error in saying her mother was Margaret Gassaway, apparently getting her older sister, Margaret, mixed up with her mother, Sabra A.
Phoebe was the daughter of Henry and Sabra Gassaway Lowery, born 1858 in Pickens County, South Carolina. She is home with her family there in 1860 (as a two-year-old) in the Long Creek community with siblings, Elizabeth, Margaret, Minerva, James H., Sabra A. and John W. (John W. had a son George by his first wife, and married 2nd Susie McCay and had a daughter he named Phoebe after his sister.)
Phoebe Lowery married Julius C. Ballew and if they had children I don't know their names. She and Julius are in the 1920 Fannin County, GA census with her brother, John W., who is widowed.
Phoebe's mother, Sabra, was the daughter of James and Sarah Gassaway who was a brother to Ira Gassaway, a pioneer settler of Polk County, Tennessee for whom Gassaway Creek was named.
