Geologist. The founder of modern tectonics. Son of mathematician Joseph Louis François Bertrand, he graduated from École Polytechnique and the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines in Paris of which he would later return as a professor. Bertrand is noted for his geologic surveys of the Provence region of south eastern France and the Jura and Alps mountain ranges. His 1887 "wave theory" of structure and evolution of the lithosphere concludes that the European mountains were formed by the successive folding and over thrusting of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle over four distinct creation periods. His research forms the basis of modern tectonics, the study of the large scale motions of the Earth's crust.
