He was educated at the University of Bonn, where he received his Ph.D. in 1848. He remained at Bonn for the rest of his life, first as a lecturer and then (from 1855) as Professor of Mathematics. He was the author of many scientific works, among them "Einleitung in die höhere Optik" (Introduction to Higher Optics), which became the standard work in that field, and "Einheit in der Electrostatik" (Unity in Electrostatics). Beer's law is a crucial component of spectrophotometry, which allows chemical analysis of solutions without extensive processing.
