Nathaniel Pendleton
Birth: Oct. 27, 1756
New Kent County
Virginia, USA
Death: Oct. 20, 1821
Hyde Park
Dutchess County
New York, USA

Jurist, Attorney General of Georgia. Joined the Revolutionary Army in 1775 and he was promoted to brevet-major and served as aide-de-camp to General Nathaniel Greene. For his service at Eutaw Springs, South Carolina, he received on September 8, 1781, the thanks of Congress. After the war he studied law in Georgia and was appointed U.S. District Judge among his many services to our country. His name was given to George Washington as a candidate for the office of Secretary of State. Nathaniel was opposed by Alexander Hamilton for the office. They later became friends and in Hamilton's famous duel with Aaron Burr, Nathaniel Pendleton served as his second to Hamilton. In 1787 he served as a delegate to the Federal Constitution Convention, but was not present when the Constitution of the United States was signed. He was also elected to the Continental Congress in 1789. He was a nephew of Edmund Pendleton and a cousin to John Penn. In 1796, he married his second wife, Susan Bard. He served as a Judge in Duchess County and resided on his farm at Hyde Park, New York, until his death. (bio by: Karen Mickel Bennett)
