US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Navy as a Seaman on board the "USS Narragansett", a 2nd class screw sloop that saw service during the Civil War. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Mare Island, California, Navy Yard in November 1874. His citation reads jumping overboard, Lakin displayed gallant conduct by rescuing 2 men of that ship from drowning".
