Major League Baseball Player. Versatile major league baseball player from 1942 to 1955 with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies. He led the National League in pinch hits in 1952 and 1953 and had a lifetime batting average of .273. He was also one of the most difficult hitters to strikeout. In 4,317 career at bats he struck out only 226 times. As a child he had bit parts in several silent films and had a small speaking role in the 1952 Ronald Reagan/Doris Day film "The Winning Team".  (bio by: Decal)
