Singer. Born Versie Eugene Allison, he was one of the pioneers of the Nashville Rhythm and Blues sound in the 1950s. As a teenager he began singing with professional gospel quartets such as The Fairfield Four and The Skylarks. In 1957 he recorded his trademark song "You Can Make It If You Try." The song reached the top five on the Billboard R&B chart and also reached the top forty on the pop charts. Other significant rhythm and blues recordings include "Have Faith" and "Everything Will Be All Right." (bio by: Decal)
