Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A merchant from Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the 9th Kentucky (USA) Volunteer Infantry at the outset of the Civil War. In April, 1862, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and fought at the Battle of Perryville in October 1862. By December of that year, he had command of the 9th Kentucky Infantry and led the regiment at the Battle of Stones River, where he was again wounded. He was promoted to Colonel in 1863, and commanded the 9th Kentucky at the Battle of Chickamauga, and in the East Tennessee Campaign, where he was wounded for the third time. After commanding his regiment during the Atlanta Campaign, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". He entered the Regular Army after the war, and was given command of a post at Galveston, Texas.
