Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in Gemmersheim, Palatinate on the Rhine River, he was a civil engineer and a mathematician. He immigrated to the United States, and served in the Mexican War, receiving a commissioned of 2nd Lieutenant in 1846. He was then promoted to Captain of Artillery on February 14, 1847 for his gallant and meritorious service and was mustered out on June 15, 1847. When the Civil War broke out he joined the 3rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry under fellow German exile Colonel Franz Sigel, as second in command. Later on after many battles he was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 17th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. His regiment was participating in General Ulysses S. Grant's Vicksburg Campaign when a huge explosion went off at Logan's approach on Fort Hill on June 25, 1863. He was then in charge of inspecting the trenches at Vicksburg when a hand grenade was thrown and he was mortally wounded. He died three weeks later of severe fever.
