Mary Lou Helms was born in 1873 in Delta County, Texas, daughter of William Thomas Helm (1848-1929) and Nancy Jane McGuyer (1853- 1926).

The 1880 Federal Census for Precinct 5, Texas (Delta County) shows Mary L. Helms, age 6, born in Texas; living with her father, Thomas Helms, a farmer, age 31, born in Texas; and her mother, Jane, age 27, born in Tennessee. Also living in the household were Mary Lou's siblings: Rufus W. Helms, age 8; John C. Helms, age 4; and Charles W. Helms, age 1; all born in Texas.

Mary Lou married Alfred Haywood Akard, who was born April 21, 1875 in Delta County, Texas, son of Henry Akard (1845-1916) and Mary Callie Terrell (1857-1909.

The World War I Draft Registration Cards show that Alfred Haywood Akard registered for the draft in Antlers, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County) on September 12, 1918. He gave his full name; his age as 43; his birthdate as April 21, 1875; his current address as Antlers; his occupation as a farmer; and his nearly relative as Mrs. M. L. (Mary Lou) Akard of Antlers, Oklahoma.

The 1930 Federal Census for Kosoma, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County) shows Mary L. Akard, age 56, born in Texas; and her husband, Alfred H. Akard, president of a lumber company, age 54, born in Texas. Living with them were three children: William T. Akard, truck driver for a lumber mill, age 21, born in Oklahoma; Jack M. Akard, age 15, born in Oklahoma; and Ray H. Akard, store salesman, age 29, born in Texas.

Haywood died January 25, 1942 in Paris, Texas (Lamar County) and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Antlers, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County). Mary Lou died in 1943 and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery beside her husband.
