Immigrating into the United States in 1853, he soon married York County-born Catharine Cremer and fathered Caroline (b. @1856), Emalina (b. 12/26/59), Elizabeth (b. @1862), Catharine (b. @1864), Magdalena (b. @1866), Charles (b. @1868), William C. (b. 02/17/70), Agnes (b. @1872), and George (b. ?). In 1860, he was a shoemaker living with his family in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with black hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York April 3, 1865, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 11 as a private with the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. G, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.
By no later than 1890, he was living in Berwick Township, Adams County, where he died at age 78-4-19 from "apoplexy" that caused an "abscess of brain following cerebral hemorrhage."
