James Akerman, age 75 of Lexington, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2016, at the Heritage Park Nursing Center in Bethany. James Henry Akerman was born July 19, 1941 in Wynnewood, OK, to Nick and Margaret Catherine (Lehman) Akerman.

Jimmy was from a large family of 9 boys and 3 girls. Jimmy’s dad nicknamed each of his children, and Jimmy’s nick name was “Grass hopper”. He loved tending to his garden and especially liked growing okra, tomatoes and watermelons. Jimmy liked keeping his flower beds clean and pretty. He was a gifted artist and could draw anything he wanted. He enjoyed wood working and made many cedar chests and other items. He could fix anything on a lawn mower and enjoyed eating Field’s Pecan Pies. He will be dearly missed!

He was preceded in death by: His parents, Nick and Margaret Akerman; His brother, George Akerman and 2 baby brothers, Clement Lee and John Williams and An infant brother; 3 brother-in-laws, R.C. Edgar, Henry Hooper and Edward Ross and 2 sister-in-laws, Myrna and Birdie Akerman.

James leaves behind: His daughter, Sharon Kay Smith and husband of Elmore City; Two Grandsons, Nathan and Lawton; Four Brothers, Dale Akerman of Norman, Ben Akerman of Blanchard, Don Akerman of Lexington and Billy Akerman of Yukon; 3 sisters, Jennie Ross of OKC, OK Lou Hooper of Lexington and Rosa Mary Edgar of Pauls Valley. Several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral Mass Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Purcell. Burial will follow at the Lexington Cemetery.
