John Lewis Barnes, 83, died early Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon.
The son of Stella (Richards) and Melvin Wallace Barnes, he was born Jan. 22, 1924 in Guymon. John attended Hardesty schools and later served his country during World War II in the Army Air Force. He was united in marriage to Mary Ella David on Oct. 8, 1954, in Clayton, New Mexico. The Barnes family made their home in Hardesty and John worked as an operator for Panhandle Eastern, retiring after 35 years. After retirement, he drove a Hardesty school bus for 15 years.
John loved God and family, loved to hunt and loved his music. He enjoyed the beauty of God's creation and nature. A talented fiddler and guitar player, John dedicated his music to the Lord and to his community, playing at nursing homes and senior citizens centers.
Survivors include his loving wife of more than 52 years, Mary Barnes of the home in Hardesty; three daughters Lou Ella and husband, Melvin Stephens of Plainview, Texas; Brenda and husband, Jerry Pope of Dumas, Texas; and Mona and husband, Tony Saucedo of Hardesty; a son, Johnnie Barnes of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Ava Lou Bingley of Rogers, AR; and Helen and husband, Paul Crall of Dallas, Texas; and a brother, Bob Barnes and wife, Marlene of Bartlesville, Okla. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Bradley Barnes, Brandy Powell, Samantha Tarlton; Mykel Stephens, Misty McCoy, Joshua Stephens; Ishka Hudson; Naomi Sandoval and Joe Applegate; and 14 grandchildren, Daniel and Zoey Powell; Randy, Haley, Cody & Cory Stephens; John, Kinzie, and Brayton McCoy; Carter, Kyzen & Mary Koren Hudson; and Aaron & Gabriella Sandoval.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Betty Jo McClannahan, two brothers, Lee Barnes and Richard Barnes, and a grandchild, Joni-Jean Pope.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning, July 17, at 10 a.m. at the Hardesty High School Auditorium with Rev. Lloyd Riddles, pastore of Sunset Lane Baptist Church officiating. Military rites will follow in Hartville Cemetery under the direction of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.
