Merle was the second child and oldest son of Herbert Anderson and Lena Maude Rundall. When he came from his parent's home to Cedar Rapids, he stayed with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Rundall and worked at the Quaker Oats plant. He had three sisters, Leona, Marjorie and Evelyn, and two brothers, George and James.
