The funeral for Virgil H. Aberg will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa; the Rev. Matt Larson will officiate. Burial will be in Hesper Lutheran Cemetery, with the American Legion and VFW providing military rites.

Mr. Aberg, 85, of Mabel, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2008) at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa.

Born Oct. 12, 1923, in the Lime Springs, Iowa, area, he graduated from Mabel High School in 1940. On Nov. 21, 1942, he married Kathryn L. Anderson at the Hesper Lutheran Church. They began farming in the Hesper area. In January 1945, Mr. Aberg entered the Army and served in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Following his separation from the Army, he returned to the farm. In 1957, the couple moved to Newburg Township, Fillmore County, where they continued farming. For almost 40 years he farmed with his son, Brian, up until the last few years.

Mr. Aberg was a member of Hesper Lutheran Church and a longtime member of the American Legion and VFW. For several years he and his wife were involved in ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens). He had also served several years on the Mabel-Canton School Board and church council, as well as the Mabel Creamery, Meadowland Dairy, and Wisconsin Dairy boards. He enjoyed entertaining his grandchildren, golf, traveling, and playing cards.

Survivors include three sons, Brian (Cheryl) of Mabel, Bruce of Preston and Brent (Robin) of Forest City, Iowa; six grandchildren; and special friend Dorothy Anderson of Mabel. He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 27, 2001; a brother, Melvin; and a sister, Thelma Ira.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Memorials are preferred to Fillmore Place in Preston.
