Wife of E.H. Amos
Mrs. Nancy Amos, widow of the late Elijah H. Amos, died at her home in Knoxville about noon on Monday, April 19, 1920 age 86 years, 3 months, 10 days. The maiden name of deceased was Nancy J. Jones. She was born in New York State on January 9, 1834 and was united in marriage with E. H. Amos on March 13, 1864.
During the years immediately following the civil war, Mr. and Mrs. Amos lived in Jasper County, near Monroe where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits. In the year 1871, they came to Marion County and settled in Knoxville, and in January 1874, opened a hotel here that was known far and wide as the ďAmos House." Later he became president of the Knoxville National Bank and was well known in financial circles for many years.
To Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Amos three children were born - Don C., Eliza and George L., all of whom are long since deceased. Don died March 4, 1868, Eliza, October 12, 1870, and George Amos passed away in New York City, April 5, 1901. The husband and father died April 20, 1902. Since that time the old lady had lived alone, except for the company of her brother, Samuel Jones, who died suddenly a few years ago; and her sister-in-law, Mrs. W. W. Jones, who made her home with deceased for some years.
George Amos Jr. only grandson (perhaps the only living near relative) also has made his home with his grandmother.
She was a most splendid woman in every sense of that term and leaves large circle of true friends.
