GEORGE HERTEL DEAD
The people of this community were shocked and saddened the 28th, when
informed that George HERTEL had passed away at his home east of Hanston, after being kicked by a horse the day before.
He was preparing to go to his work, and had entered the barn for his team, but did not speak to the horses as he usually did. In some manner, he brushed one of the animals, startling it, and the accident occured.
He managed to get to the house, and first aid was given, and was for awhile thought the injury would not prove serious, but by night it was apparent that his condition was critical. Dr. Wycoff was called, and did everything possible, but he grew worse, and passed away at 11 o'clock the following day.
George Ferdinand Hertel was born in Tiptonville, New Mexico, August 25, 1896, and departed this life at Hanston, Kansas July 28, 1927, at the age of 30
years, 11 months and 3 days. At the age of 5, he moved to Kansas with his parents and located on a farm a mile from Hanston where he grew to manhood. On May 3, 1917, he was united in marriage to Ruth A. Warnock of Partridge,
Kansas. To this union was born two children.
George and his family have always resided on a farm in the close vicinity of Hanston. He was brought up in the Catholic faith and was a true and devout Christian to his death. He was always a loving and kind husband, father, son,
and brother, as well as a friend to all who knew him, and his death is a loss that will be felt by many. His father preceeded him to the Great Beyond almost three years ago. Also, a little brother and sister who died in infancy were waiting to meet him in his eternal reward.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two little children, his mother, Mrs. Ida Hertel, two brothers, Lee and Christy, two sisters, Mrs. Ethel SEAMAN and Miss Susie HERTEL (later became SALMANS), a grandmother, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services were held at the St. Anthony Church Sunday morning at 9:30 conducted by Rev. J.E. Hackenbroich of Kinsley, and the body tenderly laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery near his father (at Hanston, Kansas).
