James K. Polk Bilbrey was a soldier during the Civil War, who served for both the Confederate and Union army.

At 17 years of age, he first joined the Confederate army, Co. D, 25th Reg. Tenn Infantry in September of 1861, at Livingston, TN. He was discharged from the 25th Infantry in December of 1862 for being under the age of 18.

James Knox Polk Bilbrey served in the Union army during the Civil War. He joined the Union army, Co. A, 1st Tenn Mtd Infantry at Carthage, TN for a one-year enlistment in January of 1864. James served in the regiment known as the "Union Guards" until the end of January 1865. He filed and received a pension for his service in the Union army on Sept 17, 1890, of which both, he and his wife upon his death received until her death.
