HANOVER ‒ Ralph W. Anderson, 73, of Hanover, a local poultry breeder for many years, died Wednesday in South Shore Hospital, Weymouth.
Born in Dorchester, he moved to Hanover where, in 1928, he began raising poultry which hatched over 15 million chicks and which were shipped all over the world and sold locally.
A graduate of Stockbridge Agricultural College at the University of Massachusetts, he originated the Buffsex-Link breed of poultry.
He was a member of Phoenix Lodge, Pilgrim Royal Arch Chapter, Abington, Old Colony Commandery, Abington, and Abington Council R and M, South Shore Shrine Club, Cape Cod Shrine Club and was a life member of Aleppo Temple Shrine, Boston.
He was also a member of the Motorcar Club of America, South Shore Antique Auto Club and Abington Fraternal Club, a former member of the Hereford Breeding Association of the United States and a member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau.
Mr. Anderson had received the ‘E Pennant’ from the government for increased poultry production during World War II and also the ‘S Award’ from Stockbridge College.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel E. (Ellis) Anderson; three daughters, Marilyn Maclary of Wallingford, Conn., Barbara M. Moriarty of North Scituate, Helen-Trudy Vitous of Marysville, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Forest MacDonald of Elsegunda, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
A family funeral service will be held tomorrow at Magoun Funeral Home, 135 South Union St., Rockland. Rev. Raymond Low, rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Scituate, will officiate. Burial will be in Hanover Center Cemetery.”
