GREAT BARRINGTON -- Ernest R. Beckwith Sr., 74, of 128 Lake Buel Road died Thursday at home.
Born in Great Barrington on Oct. 13, 1930, son of Paul and Hedwig Stehlin Beckwith, he graduated from the former Searles High School.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Beckwith owned and operated Beaver Buster Trapping Services and Beckwith's Firewood Sales. From 1969 to 1971, he and his wife, the former Margaret Finnegan, also owned Beckwith's Sportsman Shop.
A hunter and fisherman, he was an advocate of sportsmen's rights and a member of the Great Barrington Fish and Game Club. He also was a delegate for the Berkshire County League of Sportsmen, which named him Sportsman of the Year in 1998. He was named Trapper of the Year in 1991 by the Massachusetts Trappers Association and received citations from both the state House of Representatives and the Senate. He also was a past president of the Izaak Walton League and a Boston Red Sox fan.
He and his wife, a Great Barrington selectman, were married Sept. 1, 1956, in Stephentown, N.Y.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Ernest R. Beckwith Jr. of Sheffield, James Beckwith of Mount Washington and Bruce Beckwith of Great Barrington; two daughters, Anne Ranolde and Laurie Beckwith, both of Great Barrington; three brothers, Paul Beckwith of New Hampshire, Lawrence Beckwith of Lee and Philip Beckwith of Great Barrington; two sisters, Joan Crear of Lee and Christina Touponce of Arizona; 11 grandchildren, and three stepgrandchildren.
