Charles Phillip Alexander, 86, of Barron, Wis., died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Barron Medical Center.

He was born on May 3, 1917, to Ben and Clara (Alexander) Martindale in Ladysmith, Wis. He was adopted and raised by his maternal grandparents Harry Phillip Alexander and Eleanore Mae (Waltz) Alexander. He was raised on the family farm west of Hillsdale in Maple Grove Township, and attended Nelson Dewey grade school.

He married Gladys Thora Dalen on March 29, 1939, in Barron, Wis. Following their marriage they lived for a short time west of Hillsdale before buying a farm near Chetek, Wis. In 1945, they bought a farm in the Town of Clinton, Barron County, Wis., where they resided until moving to Barron in July of 2001.

Charles was active in farming until 1963, and was employed by the Barron County Highway Department for 25 years, retiring in 1981. He served for a number of years on the Paul Revere School Board in the Town of Clinton and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Barron. He was a long-time member of Northwood Camping Club and an active 4-H Leader for many years.

He is survived by his wife Gladys Alexander of Barron; daughter, DeAnn (Allen) Anderson of Town of Clinton, Barron County, Wis.; sons, Charles Dean (Barbara) Alexander of Spring Lake Park, Minn., and Dan Alexander of Richfield, Minn.; five grandchildren, Tammy (Kurt) Rosselit of Minneapolis, Minn., Jay Charles (Donna) Alexander of Plymouth, Minn., and Gary, Gretchen and Michael Anderson of Almena; four great-grandchildren; sister, Betty (Floyd) Klein of Dallas, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; three brothers, John, Paul and Robert; three sisters, Wilma (Baldwin) Moeller, Mabel (Oscar) Ween and Alma Belle (Earl) Olin.

A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Charles P. Alexander (Dad) was celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at First Lutheran Church in Barron. The Rev. Bruce Beyer officiated. Burial was at Wayside Cemetery in Barron.
