Betty Jean Atwood, 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at her home in Exeland, Township of Murry.
Betty was born on Sept. 8, 1928, to Fred and Henrietta Doege and lived her entire life at this address. She had one brother, Robert Lewis Doege. She attended the North Star Grade School and graduated from Bruce High School in 1945. She then attended the Rusk County Normal School, where she obtained her teaching certificate. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and taught school for 41 years, retiring in 1988.
On Feb. 14, 1951 she married Charles "Bud" Atwood at the Exeland Lutheran Church. Their only child Christine Joy was born Feb. 17, 1959. After retirement, they traveled all over the U.S. They spent winters in Texas, Arizona and Florida. They also spent a lot of time at their cabin on Nelson Lake with their grandchildren.
Betty belonged to the First Lutheran Church of Exeland, the Murry Homemakers and the Bruce Ladies Auxiliary.
When she was able, she enjoyed working in her flowers and mowing the lawn.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bud, who passed away on Jan. 17, 2005; and her brother Robert (Elsie).
Betty is survived by her daughter Christine (Tom) Thorson of Exeland; her grandchildren Cory Heiny of Cameron and Jodi (Todd) Meinke of Bruce; her great-grandsons Carl Howard and Colten Charles Meinke of Bruce; her special friends Bill and Brenda Shimko; her sister-in-law Beverly (George) Reams of Montana; her brothers-in-law Dale (Delores) Atwood of Bruce, Ron (Bev) Atwood of Wheeler, and Maurice "Red' Atwood of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 3, at the First Lutheran Church in Exeland.
Interment was at Windfall Cemetery.
