Birth: Apr. 17, 1885
Death: 1909

Child of GW&RA

George W. Arbegust, who was terribly injured January 8, in a collision between a Big Four passenger train and a handcar at Altamont, died at 5 o’clock last evening at the home of his sister, Mrs. Susan Christian, of South Fifth street, his death resulting from the injuries he received in the accident. He was in the employ of the Big Four as section hand at the time of the accident. There was a dense fog that day and as he was ridding on a handcar near Altamont he was over-taken by a swift passenger train. He and his companions jumped off, but had not time to take the car off the track. The locomotive struck it and hurled it against Arbegust crushing his left leg. He was taken to St. Elizabeth hospital, in Lafayette, where his leg was amputated. Recently he brought suit against the Gig Four for $15,000 damages. Arbegust was born at Clark’s Hill April 17, 1885, and was a son of the late George Arbegust. He was a member of the Christian church at Clark’s Hill and an exemplary young man. The family has been unfortunate. The father had an arm shot off while hunting; a brother, Ward, lost an arm while working for the Big Four and his brother Garrett had a finger cut off while in the employ of the same company. His father and brother Garrett died within the last eighteen months. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Rosanna Arbegust, two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Monroe, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Susan Christian of this city, and two brothers, Ward and William Arbegust of this city. The funeral will be conducted from the Christian church to-morrow morning at 9 o’clock and the interment will be in the Union cemetery at Clark’s Hill.
