He was married in Cayuga on June 9, 1944, to Martha R. Newnum. She died in 1995.
He is survived by a grandson, Rodney (Kim) Abernathy of Covington and a great-granddaughter, Jessica; a brother, Leon (Judy) Abernathy; a sister, Lefa Mitchell, both of Covington AND sisters, Leah Maddox of Indianapolis and Marlis Morgan of Houston, Texas.
He served in the Army in the 94th Infantry Division with Company C of the 302 Infantry Regiment in Northern France, Ardennes, Germany, Luxembourg, and Czechoslovakia as part of Patton's Third Army during World War II. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.
