Born in Lee County, Virginia, Martha Scott came to Hendricks County, Indiana with her parents. She married Johnson Brookshire in Hendricks County on Nov. 30, 1856. They were the parents of a son Reuben and daughters Elizabeth (Brookshire) Scott, Sarah Ellen (Brookshire) Smith and Mary Eliza (Brookshire) Pearcy. Martha's Indiana death certificate indicates she was buried in the Montgomery Cemetery in Hendricks County. According to her brother Samuel's obituary, she was the last survivor of her family.

Her husband, Johnson Brookshire, was first married to Ally Aldridge. His Indiana death certificate shows he died on April 29, 1900 in Marion County and is buried at a J____ Chapel.

Mrs. Martha S. Brookshire died at her home, 711 East Walnut street, Thursday, July 25, 1912, at 7:40 p.m., after an illness of seven years. She was born in Lee county, Virginia September 9, 1826, and was, at the time of her death, 85 years, 10 months and 16 days of age. Mrs. Brookshire was married in Hendricks county to the late Johnson Brookshire, who died May 1, 1900. The following children survive this union: Mrs. Elizabeth Scott, of this city; Mrs. Sarah Smith of Renssalear; Mrs. Mary Pearcy, of Frankfort, and a step-son, John Brookshire, of this city. Mrs. Brookshire was a member of the Methodist church at Lizton, where the funeral was held at 11 o'clock a.m. Saturday. Rev. M. H. Appleby officiated. Interment at Montgomery Cemetery.
