John M. Altman Commits Suicide
Over Ill Health

John M. Altman, age 48, 619 Obispo St., took his own life here Tuesday morning.

His body was found 2 1/2 miles southwest of Culver near his parked car about 6:30 last night by Chief of Police Donald Mikesell and Fire Chief David Burns who wee looking for his car because Mrs. Altman had called the sheriff when she found a note written by her husband which led her to become apprehensive about his actions.

Also a shotgun belonging to Mr. Altman was missing from their home and he had not been seen at his shoe repair shop in Plymouth since before 10 a.m.

Marshall County corner Dr. Marshall Stihle of Bremen, said that he had died about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday of a self inflicted gunshot in his chest. Mr. Altman had been despondent over poor health.

Born at South Bend March 8, 1911 Mr. Altman had resided in Culver since he was an infant. He was graduated from Culver High School in 1931. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 101st Airborne Division in European Theater.

For the past nine years he owned and operated the Shatford shoe repair shop in Plymouth.

Surviving are his wife, Helen; a son Arl, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Jeanne Williams, Culver, and a sister, Mrs. Bontia Eads, Urbana.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Emmanuel Evangelical United Church of the Brethren were he was a member. Rev. Vernon L. Palmer, pastor will officiate and burial will be at the Culver Masonic Cemetery.
