Ivan Albert, 88, Dies Instantly
When Hit by Pennsylvania
Flyer at Royal Center.
Last rites for Ivan Albert, 88,
who was killed at 5:15 p.m. Saturday
when he was struck by a Pennsylvania
flyer in Royal Center, will
be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the
Harrison funeral home. Friends
may call at the Harrison chapel
and burial will be made in Davis
cemetery.
Albert, a retired Cass county
farmer and former baggageman for
the Pennsylvania railroad, had
been to the downtown area of Royal
Center and was apparently taking
a short cut between Center and
North streets lo his home in the
west part of town.
The train. No. 303, a Jacksonville
to Chicago flyer, hit him as
he was crossing the tracks near
the railroad depot and threw his
body possibly 25 or 30 feet.
Sheriff, Coroner Investigate
Dr. M. B. Stewart, Cass county
coroner, who went to the scene
with Sheriff Claude Berkshire, said
members of the train crew were
the only witnesses to the accident
and that the inquest, into Albert's
death would be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday
at the coroner's office in
the court house. Dr. Stewart said
ten persons had been subpoenaed
to appear.
The train crew included Engineer
G. W. Streu, Fireman G. E. Waisner,
Conductor G. W. Long, Brakeman
H. H. Thomas and Flagman
R. A. Clary. The crew were not
immediately available for statement.
After the accident, the train
backed" up to the scene and a section
foreman, F. II. Nethercutt,
was left in charge.
Cass County Native
Albert was born in Jefferson
township, Cass county, on Jan. 31,
1865, to Jacob and Mary (Evans)
Albert.
He was employed by the Pennsylvania
railroad as a baggageman
for 23 years before retiring to a
farm in Clinton township in 1914.
He retired from farming 12 years
ago, when he moved to Royal Center.
He was a member of the Presbyterian
church.
He leaves the widow, Hannah
(O'Toole) Albert, a half-sister, Ida
Roller, Ft. Wayne, and nieces and
nephews.
