Lewis was the son of Alexander Barton (1788-1848) and Elizabeth Sowell (1792-1824). He and Martha Oliver (1826-1873) were married 24 Nov 1842 . Lewis grew up with nine siblings: Rachel Barton Pendell (1815-1870), William B. Barton (1815-1839), Ruth Barton Crunk (1817-1846), Alfred S. Barton (1818-1874), James Barton (1822-1871), Ann Barton Crunk (1824-1888), John Barton (1827-1846), Elizabeth Barton Hall (1828-1905), and Jane Barton (1829-?).
