Nolan "Whiz" Beck, 57, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 in Marathon, Wis. after waging war with cancer since 2002.

Whiz was born Nov. 1, 1956.

Whiz worked for 31-plus years in higher education at Ferris State College in Michigan; the University of Wyoming in Laramie; and the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County in Wausau (which he called the greatest job) until his retirement in 2011.

He met his wife, Deborah "Debbie" in Hyattville in 1977 when working as a fishing guide in the Big Horn Mountains. They were married on Aug. 5, 1978 in Ten Sleep and resided in Big Rapids, Mich. where they both attended Ferris State University. Whiz graduated in 1979 with a B.S. degree in Science Education with emphasis in chemistry and mathematics.

In the fall of 1979, he took a job in student services as hall director at Ferris State University that would forever change his life and career path. In March 1981, Whiz took a job at the University of Wyoming which allowed him to pursue his Master's and Doctorate degrees in Educational Administration with an emphasis in effective leadership, law and student affairs. While completing his UW degrees, Debbie and Whiz started their family in Laramie with all five children being born in Laramie. His passion for hunting, fishing and guiding remained a major part of life while living near the mountains and in Wisconsin. He also took up officiating basketball which he did at numerous levels, including several state championship games in Wyoming. His love for fishing and hunting took a back seat when the grandchildren came along. Lucy Cannon and Jaxon Montague became his thrill.

While residing in Laramie, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that forever changed his life. He was active and committed to the beliefs of the gospel and families. His dream and goal was to see his three sons earn their BSA Eagle Rank, serve missions and all of his children be married in an LDS Temple of Lord for time and all eternity.

In 1996, Whiz moved from his beloved state of Wyoming to Wausau, Wis. to become the new Director of Student Services at UWMC. He remained very active in the LDS Church and with great pride he witnessed his sons achieve Eagle Rank, and all five children served LDS missions in various parts of the world. He also saw his two daughters marry wonderful men and his youngest son, Troy, bring another daughter into the family. Whiz and Debbie strongly believe in the value of serving others, community and God. His passion for education was always evident. He was always a champion for the underdog and students who struggled in school or were told they would not make it. He was active in raising funds for student scholarships at UWMC and the Marathon School Foundation. He served as Bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Wausau Ward from 2002-2007.

He was recognized for his outstanding leadership with the UW System and UWMC. In 2002, he was the recipient of the Academic Staff Award for Excellence by US System Board of Regents, and to date is the only individual from a two-year college in the UW System to receive the award, an award he cherished receiving and knowing that it was the result of his great staff and team at UWMC.

Whiz will be remembered for many years for his passion for life and optimism. But what would you expect for someone who wanted to be called Whiz and not Dr. Beck. His legacy will be his children and much more.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Whiz is survived by the love of his life and eternal companion Debbie of Marathon; their five children, Holly (Jake) Montague of Salt Lake City, Utah, Travis Beck of Salt Lake City, Heidi (Stephen) Cannon of Nashville, Tenn., Tyler Beck of Rexburg, Idaho, and Troy (Jordan) Beck of Rexburg; his sister, Brenda (companion Ann Bouts) from Victoria, Australia; two brothers, Paul (Vilma) Beck of St. Johns, Mich. and Terry (Sherri) Beck of Ashley, Mich. and his pride and joy – two grandchildren, Lucy Cannon and Jaxon Nolan Montague.
