Dorothy was born in Dell Grove on September 18, 1922 in Sandstone, MN to Walter and Amy (Magnuson) Gustafson. She was a lifetime resident of the Sandstone area. Dorothy married Melvin Rostberg on February 8, 1948. Dorothy and Melvin made their home on a farm west of Sandstone where they raised their family. In 1970, in addition to working on the family farm, Dorothy began working part time at the Willow River State Nursery harvesting seedling trees where she was employed for 30 years. She loved being with her family and having family reunions. She had a passion for gardening, baking and cooking and was well known for her homemade bread, buns and cinnamon rolls. No guest, regardless of the time of day, was allowed to leave her home without a meal. In 1994, after 46 years of farming, Melvin and Dorothy retired and moved to Hinckley.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters JoAnn (Carl) Jerdin, Nancy (John) Sylvester, LaDonna (Fred) Lyon, and sons Ron Gustafson, John (Christine) Rostberg, Jim (Kathy) Rostberg, Marvin Rostberg (friend Brenda), 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchilden; brothers Wayne, Harold, Willard and Stan; sisters Louise Nystrom, Elaine Williams, June Anderson, and Karen Helwig; plus many other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Amy Gustafson; her husband, Melvin, of 60 years; sisters - Ruth Lind and Agnes Youngdahl; brothers - Lawrence, Albert and Billy Gustafson. Pallbearers are her grandsons: Dan and David Smith, Todd, Bryan and Mark Sylvester, Jason and Nathan Lyon and Jake Rostberg. Vocalist/pianist is Erin Fox and instrumentalist is Fred Lyon.
Funeral service and visitations will be held at Dell Grove Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Sandstone, MN. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 23, 2016 with Pastors Kim Sturtz and Brenda Wicklund officiating. Visitations will be 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, April 22, at the church and from 10:00 to 11:00 am prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at Trinity Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Kroschel Township of Kanabec County.
