Sharon Marie Sahlberg was born April 2, 1951 to Harry and Mabel (Mattson) Sahlberg in Detroit Lakes, MN. She grew up on Middle Cormorant Lake and graduated from Lake Park High School in 1969. She earned a degree from North Dakota State University in 1973.

On December 26, 1982, she married Alan Brutlag in Elbow Lake, MN. They lived on the Brutlag family farm near Wendell. Sharon was a Home Economics and Special Education teacher at West Central Area from 1975-1997.

An avid lover of the outdoors, Sharon enjoyed kayaking, camping, hiking, cross country skiing, and scuba diving. She participated in a Bi-Centennial 500 mile bike ride in 1976. In 1978, she took a sabbatical from teaching to volunteer at a children's home in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sharon was active in many school activities and a good resource for her fellow teachers. One of her pet projects was the creation of the bird sanctuary at the WCA North Elementary School.

Sharon was a Sunday School teacher, Superintendent, and member of the Board of Education for Trinity Lutheran Church in Wendell. She helped sponsor the annual Operation Christmas Shoebox drives.

Active in local crafts, Sharon participated in several quilting groups and engaged her fellow quilters with her wit and energy. Annually she hosted a weekend quilting retreat.

Prairie Wind Players Community Theatre productions were enhanced by Sharon's theatrical participation in "The Wizard of Oz," "A Piece of My Heart," "Last of the Red Hot Lovers," and "Plain Hearts."

Sharon was a good friend to many; however her most important role was being a mother to her two children, Erin and Ben. She loved creating a warm and attractive home for her family and friends. Her love of flowers, particularly those that were native to Minnesota, inspired her annual Garden Party and the many other gatherings that occurred at the Brutlag home.

She is survived by her husband, Alan; daughter, Erin; son, Benjamin; and sister, Laurel (Mickie) Hanson of Gary, MN; her mother-in-law, Grace Brutlag; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul and Gwen Brutlag, and Larry and Naomi Brutlag; eight nieces, two nephews, and five great nieces and nephews.
