Mildred Benhardus Holmen, 89, of Alexandria, died on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
She was born Dec. 31, 1920, to Martin and Mary (Juvland) Benhardus in St. Olaf Township of Otter Tail County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bethel Lutheran Church in rural Battle Lake. She was active in Luther League, many church activities and taught Sunday school. She was a woman of great faith all her life.
She graduated from Ashby High School in 1939 and then Moorhead State Teacher's College. She taught in various country schools in Otter Tail County and then first and second grade in Ashby.
She married Seiford Holmen on June 11, 1955. The couple made their home in Bergen, Minn., near Windom. They were members of Hauge's Lutheran Church and later the American Lutheran Church of Windom.
Mildred taught the third grade in Mountain Lake. She received her Bachelor's degree from Mankato State. She became the business manager for Holmen Construction.
In 1961, their son, Bradley, came into their lives and after losing Baby Girl Holmen came another son, Brian. After her husband's death in 1997, Mildred moved to Alexandria to split her time with Bradley and helping her sisters Olga O'Donnell and Agnes Benhardus with their resort, Norway Beach, on Stalker Lake.
She joined Bethel Lutheran Church and was very active in their quilting mission for Lutheran World Relief. In the final year of her life she sewed 91 quilt tops.
Mildred was known for her skills in cooking, poetry, prose and skit writing for church and family events. She kept diaries, did crossword puzzles and enjoyed mystery novels. Bradley felt blessed to live these past few years with his best friend, his beloved mother Mildred. She also loved and adored Brian and his family. Her grandchildren were very special to her and she also loved her many nieces, nephews and friends. She was an inspiration to many and will be dearly missed.
