"Paul Edward Ahern Jr., 66, of Spring Valley, died April 22, 2006 at the Spring Valley Care Center.
He was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Lanesboro to Paul and Christie (Bastian) Ahern and attended Chatfield High School. On Aug. 18, 1956 he married Donna Plank at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He worked for Gopher Welding in Rochester from 1957 to 1961, when he enlisted in the Navy. He served on the USS Coral Sea during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1966. He returned to Gopher Welding and worked there until 1982. The couple moved to Blooming Prairie, where they owned and operated a restaurant until 1985. They then moved to Spring Valley, where Mr. Ahern drove truck for Moeller farms and worked part-time at Kwik Trip until he became ill. He was a member of the Spring Valley American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include three sons, Tim (Gwen) of Plainview, and Mark and John, both of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Colleen (John) DeVetter of Owatonna; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and three sisters, Virginia Johnson, Carol Ahern and Eileen (Vic) Rathbun, all of Spring Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 17, 1995, and a sister.
The funeral for Paul Edward Ahern Jr., was April 26 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. Dennis Timmerman officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester. Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements."
