Joseph Acuña, 90, of Calexico passed away of natural causes Sunday, July 8 in his home.

Joe was born on August 7, 1916 in Mesa, Arizona and at the age of one, his family moved to Calexico. He was the oldest of six brothers and one sister. He attended local schools and graduated from Calexico High School in 1937. Shortly after marrying Antonieta "Toni" Medina, Joe Acuña started his employment and entrepreneur career. Back in the early 1940's Joe held several differect jobs beginning as a meter reader for the Imperial Irrigation District, he was able to work his way up to supervisor of the water department. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably. After returning home, Joe opened a Dry Cleaning business which he owned and operated successfully for several years.

In the early 1950's, Joe opened his "Pride and Joy" Business, Joe Acuña Appliances which was located in down town Calexico where the Western Auto Store is currently located. The Appliance store was later relocated to Heffernan Avenue where Durazo's Men's Wear is currently located. Joe owned and operated his appliance business successfully for over 25 years. Joe dedicated a good part of his life to serving the people of the Imperial and Mexicali Valley's with excellent merchandise and excellent customer service.

Joe sold TV's, Stereos, Washers and Dryers, Refrigerators and Stoves, Air Conditioners and Desert Coolers, Furniture and miscellaneous electrical equipment. He was very proud to have been selected a distributor for such well known manufacturers like Westinghouse, Maytag, Fedders, Zenith, RCA and Sylvania. During the 1950's and early 1960's there was only black and white TV's and no television cable service in the Imperial Valley, limiting TV reception to one Yuma station and one Mexicali station. At that time, the best way to receive TV service was by installing a TV antenna on your roof. Joe installed hundreds of antennas throughout the Imperial Valley for several years. He offered in-house financing and as such, improved the quality of life for many families for several years. He loved Calexico, and he loved giving back to his community. Joe served on several service clubs, the Kiwanis, Elks, Rotarians and the American Legion.

Additionally, Joe was extremely proud to have been voted into the Calexico City Council in 1964. In 1967, serving as mayor, the President of the United States, Lyndon Johnson, extended Joe a personal invitation to visit him in the White House. This was an extremely proud time for the entire Acuña family. In the late 1960's through the early 1970's Joe was appointed Post Master in Calexico. His political appointment as Post Master lasted for a few years. Subsequently, Joe remained with the U.S. Post Office for a total of 24 years serving in the capacity of a Rural Route Carrier.

Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his wife, 8 children, 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren unconditionally.
