LaVerne M. Powers, 82, Sisseton, SD, formerly of Beardsley, MN, died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at his residence in Sisseton. Private family services will be held at a later date. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
LaVerne Milton Powers was born October 30, 1923, in Big Stone County near Beardsley, MN, to Leslie and Emma (Sittig) Powers. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. He attended rural school in the Beardsley area. On July 12, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving as a paratrooper in the 502nd Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He served in the Central European Campaign receiving the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and two Overseas Service bars. He was honorably discharged June 24, 1946. After returning home, LaVerne owned and operated a pool hall in Beardsley and also began aerial spraying. Later he worked road construction for McGary's Construction out of St. Cloud, MN.
On November 7, 1965, he married Foy Wilkins in Ortonville, MN. They made their home in the Beardsley area. After retiring, they moved to Las Vegas, NV, and managed motels. In 1987, they returned to Beardsley, MN, and in 2000 moved to Browns Valley, MN. In 2005, they moved to Sisseton, SD. LaVerne was a member of the Sisseton American Legion Post #50 and the Disabled Veterans. He enjoyed flying and in his younger days, riding motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife, Foy of Sisseton, SD; two brothers, John Powers of Minneapolis, MN, and Jim (Sharon) Powers of Las Vegas, NV; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Irene Schmidt; and two brothers, Robert and Roger.
