4th Sergeant, Co. A, 3rd Virginia State Line (Moccasin Rangers). Enlisted 15 July 1861 in Calhoun Co., Va. Private Co. A, 19th Virginia Cavalry. Born Calhoun (Lewis) Co.1841-1843. Age 17, farmer, Calhoun Co. 1860 Census. Enlisted Williamsburg, Greenbrier County, W.Va. 1 Mar. 1863. Not stated if present or absent on muster-in-roll dated March 1863. Enlisted in 20th Virginia Cavalry, Company H, at Camp Northwest, W.Va. on 1 June 1863. Elected 1st Lieutenant 4 June 1863. Commanding Company H, 2 Oct. 1863. Absent in arrest 31 Oct. 1863-31 Aug. 1864. Absent 1 Sep. 1864-31 Oct. 1864 (dated 30 Dec. 1864) in arrest. Absent 15 Dec. 1864, listed as prisoner of war since 31 Oct. 1863. Deserted. Reported to U.S. Forces 25 Dec. 1864, took the oath of allegiance and gave his bond. He lived in Center District, Calhoun County. Age 27, farmer, Center District, Calhoun Co., W.Va. 1870 Census.
