Born in Scotland, Thomas immigrated in 1835 to Burford, Ontario, Canada as an infant with his parents and seven siblings. After the death of his father in 1851, Thomas accompanied his brother William, new sister-in-law Elizabeth, and brother Alexander to Australia in 1853. In 1866 Thomas and Alexander arrived in California to join friends and family that had immigrated from Ontario.
In 1867 Thomas Baird purchased 360 acres of land outside of Clements, San Joaquin, California from Henry Gerdes which made him the second land owner after the land transfer between Mexico and California.
Thomas became a naturalized citizen Oct. 2, 1871 and a registered voter.
Thomas farmed with his older brothers William and Alexander. Out of concern for his brother William who had become blind, Thomas executed a Will in 1877 providing for the care and keeping of William until the time of William's death.
By the time of his death, the farm had increased to 385 acres and included 1,200 sheep and 9 horses and colts in addition to his personal assets. His brother Robert and nephews Robert Alexander Baird and John Alexander Blair, all residents of Ontario, Canada, came to Clements in 1879 to help with the farm. John Alexander Blair remained in Clements while Robert Baird and his son Robert Alexander Baird returned to Canada.
