Mrs. S. A. Aldrich Dead at the Age of Eighty-Six
Her only son, Ed. B. Prevented by Illness from Being With Her at the Last
During the last few months frequent mention has been made in these columns of the failing health of Mrs. Sarah Augusta Aldrich. She died on Tuesday at the home of her daughter Mrs. C. A. Woods of Suisun. The information came by telephone to her grandson, W. B. Aldrich, who only returned from a visit with her a few days ago. Her son, Ed. Aldrich, who had frequently visited her of late, is sick in this city and was unable to be at her bedside during her last hours. The body will be taken to Capay on the train which reaches there about noon on Thursday, and internment will be in the IOOF cemetery, immediately after the arrival of the train.
The maiden name of the deceased was Sarah Augusta Bates. She was born in Canton, CT on the 15th of June 1819, and had therefore attained the ripe old age of 86 years, 7 months and 8 days. She was married to J. W. Aldrich in Laporte, IN on the 8th of Jul 1842. The following year they moved to Niles, MI where Mr. Aldrich farmed for a time and later ran a grocery store. In 1853 Mr. Aldrich crossed the plains and wintered in Salt Lake. The following year he came on to El Dorado county and engaged in mining.
In 1857 he moved to Napa county and about the close of the year his family joined him, making the trip by water. They removed to Solano county and in 1859, where they engaged in the dairy business. In 1862 they went to Dayton, NV and were engaged in the hotel business until 1865, when they located in Capay valley on what was known as the B. F. Duncan farm. In 1874 they moved to the town of Capay, and built the Aldrich hotel. Mr. Aldrich died in Capay valley on the 28th of September 1902, at the age of 83 years, 10 month and 4 days.
To Mr. and Mrs. Aldirch were born a son, E. B. Aldrich, of this city, and a daughter, Mrs. Cynthia A. Woods, of Suisun. After the death of her husband Mrs. Aldrich made her home with her daughter. The deceased leaves one brother Thomas Bates, who is an inmate of the soldiers home at Yountville.
Mrs. Aldrich must have descended from a strong, virile, vigorous and long-lived family. That she should have lived nearly 87 years, retaining her physical vigor until near the close of her life, and in the full possession of her intellectual force until the end, is but little less than marvelous, and is conclusive evidence that she must have lived a simple unostentatious life. Her life work was done; her task was finished and she simply awaited the inevitable end.
Mrs. Aldrich lived through an eventful period of the world. During the 86 years of her life the United States have made the most of their wonderful growth and development. The greatest discoveries and the most useful inventions in the history of the world have been made. Many of the greatest men and women whose names and deeds have illuminated the pages of history have been born, have lived and have gone to their reward. She came into this world less than a month after Queen Victoria was born. James Monroe the fifth president of the United States was in office, and George Washington was the only president of the United States whose death preceded her birth.
Mrs. Aldrich was a devoted wife and mother and a loyal friend. No shadow of discredit ever fell upon her long and useful life. She earned the reverence and gratitude of those who knew her best, and died possessed of the riches of their love.
