James Raymond Appenzeller died early in the morning on February 1, 2005 from a sudden heart attack. He was born March 6, 1924 in Miles City, Mont. He was a graduate of the University of Washington and served 40 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1984 as a Colonel. He was a member of the 433rd Troop Carrier Group in World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He was a parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Piños, an active member of the San Benito County Grand Jury and the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife, Rita of Hollister, his son, Steve Gomez and wife Trisha of Livermore, daughters Debbie Cable and husband Greg of Hollister, Jill Wallner and husband Wally of Danville, Carol Hawkins and husband Rick of Lafayette, Mary Beth Mazzora of Antioch, and Debbie Brackett and Damon Carlucci of Belmont, as well as his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. and Evalyn Appenzeller. Visitation is today at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. A recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Services begin at the mortuary tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., with a procession to Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Piños for an 11 a.m. Mass. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Hollister Post 9242 VFW.
