The family moved to Missouri before coming west along the Oregon Trail in 1852. The crossing was hard and Edith lost a niece, (Lucy Mariah Smith #209786127) a sister, (Emily Catherine Ramey Smith #224300227) and her husband to fever along the way. James Nickel was buried 30 miles east of Fort Laramie, Wyoming. John also became sick but survived. They ended up in Elk Valley, Del Norte County, California and settled there on a ranch of 360 acres. Edith married again to William C. Ransom, but the marriage didn't work out. Their marriage was dissolved and she went back to her former name of Nickel. She then got the "creeping paralysis" and had to move in with her son and his new family before dying at her son's home in Elk Valley. Edith was 52 years old. She was buried in the Brother Jonathan Cemetery and her headstone is still there at the memorial between those of her granddaughter, Laurien and her son, John.
