Colonel Allan MacKay Acomb 6/7/1910 ~ 1/15/2004
Allan MacKay Acomb, 93, passed away on January 15, 2004, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 7, 1910, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Leland Irvine and Alice MacKay Acomb. He married Dorothy Bowman on October 30, 1936, in Washington D.C., their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 11, 1944.
Allan was the first Eagle Scout in the LeGrand Ward, and he earned all the merit badges available at the time. He was Utah State Mile Champion and held the mile record for many years. Allan served an LDS mission to England 1929 to 1931.
After serving his mission, he attended George Washington Law School, and entered the military. He served in the Philippines during World War II and was present during the Japanese surrender of the Philippines. He obtained the rank of full Colonel.
Upon return from the Philippines, he became the purchasing agent for the LDS Church. He was David O. MacKay's personal attendant for several years. He served on the building committee for the LDS Church, on the Utah State Board of Pardons, and was the chief clerk for the Utah House of Representatives.
Allan served in many different positions within the church, but his greatest position in life was that of husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Survived by his children, Bonnie (David) Sorensen, Orem, Utah, and John A. (Kathleen), Island Park, Idaho; brothers, Glenn, Salt Lake City, UT, and Kent (Jeanine), Salt Lake City, UT; nine grandchildren; 23 great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife; and brother, Dale.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2004, 11 a.m. at the Murray 23rd Ward, 755 E. Three Fountains Drive (5010 S.). Friends may call one hour prior to services at the ward. Interment will be in the Holladay Cemetery, 4900 S. Memory Lane. Funeral Directors, Holladay-CottonwoodMortuary .
