ARMSTRONG,
JOHN MICHAEL - Formerly of Horton, passed away peacefully August 25, 2011. He was born October 17, 1918 in Mystic Iowa, the youngest child of James and Abigail (Greenall) Armstrong. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Ruth; his brother, James; and his sisters, Edna Craker and Mary Etta Sacco. He is survived by his five children, Margaret (Wayne) Schuette of Horton, Michigan, Michael (Susan) Armstrong of Niles Michigan, Catherine Christensen of San Francisco, California, Martha (Jeff) Kinzel of Wilmette, Illinois and David (Shelly) Armstrong of Horton, Michigan; his grandchildren, John Schuette, Rebekah (Ryan) Fitts, Robert (Anna) Schuette, Jennifer (Chuck) Ferrell, Sean (Ruth) Armstrong, Ian Armstrong, Aleksandr and Niko Thomas, John and James Kinzel and Nate and Josh Armstrong; and his cat, Ike. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara (RJ) Renner; brother-in-law, Tim (Marhlene) Rainey; sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Jeanne Rainey; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Mystic High School in 1938, and moved to Michigan shortly thereafter, where he met the love of his life Ruth Rainey. He was inducted into the 3rd Infantry Corp. of the US Army in 1941 and served in World War II both stateside and in the European Theater. After returning from the war, he was employed at Kelsey Hayes in Jackson until his retirement. While at Kelsey Hayes, he was a founding member of the Kelsey Hayes Credit Union (Consumers Professional Credit Union) and served many years as its President. He was also a charter member of the Hanover-Horton Area Lions Club, receiving the Melvin Jones award for dedicated service in 2009. Jack was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Chapter 8820 in Concord Michigan. He served as the township treasurer for Hanover Township for many years. After his retirement, he and Ruth enjoyed traveling with his brother, Jim and sister-in- law, Lula, making trips to the upper peninsula of Michigan and to Texas in the winter. He enjoyed gardening, baking and woodworking and in his later years knitting and crocheting for family and friends. Jack and his wife were also avid square dancers with the M99er's. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Concord on Monday August 29, at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Dennis Spitzley officiating. Internment in Horton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Hanover Horton Lions Club at 6965 Folks Rd., Horton, Michigan 49246, or to St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church at 211 Harmon Ave. Concord, Michigan 49237.

Visitation will be held at the WATSON FUNERAL CHAPEL on Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary service at 4:30 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service
