Settled in Copley, Ohio from New York with his family in 1832 and worked as a Cooper in his father's shop. In 1856, moved west from Copley by wagon train to Leon, Wisconsin via Chicago. He purchased 40 acres of public land from the U.S. Land Office and farmed. In 1872, he was elected Town Assessor of Wells.
