John was the eldest son of Alexander Blair and Elizabeth Cochran born in either 1754 or 1756. In 1777 he joined the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment. He was wounded in the shoulder by a musket ball in the Battle of Three Rivers and soon, thereafter, was captured by the British at Quebec. Returning in a prisoner exchange he joined the 7th Regiment as a lieutenant. He resigned his commission in May 1779.
He served as a guide at Fort Pitt for pioneers coming down the Ohio River. In 1782 he explored the Flemingsburg, KY area and later moved to Elizaville. In 1786 he married Eleanor Hamilton. Little is known about all of their children.
