Death: Feb. 14, 2004
Winter Haven

He died of pulmonary fibrosis, Sat. Feb 14, 2004 at the age of 80. He caught his first fish at the age of 4 and went on to become a member of the Fishing Hall of Fame and owner of Bagley Bait Co. in Winter Haven, FL.

"He was very smart and creative" said his wife Vera. While working as a master electritian he began designing his own fishing lures, his wife remembers. What began in a small building behind Andy's Igloo on 3rd St in Winter Haven grew into a 15 building operation with more than 200 employees and a reputation for quality products that was located at the corner of 42nd St and Recker Hwy. in Winter Haven. Bagley Bait Co. est. in 1954, created many of the most popular lures. He designed more realistic-looking lures and almost the machinery that made them. "Anything he saw put out, he would take apart and improve on it." his wife said. His inventive personality wasn't exclusive to fishing. Among his other inventions were grove heaters and a no-slice spray for golf balls, his wife said. "His mind was constantly going",. she said, remembering the times he would wake in the middle of the night with an idea.

Mrs. Bagley, who is now writing a book about her husband, said one of the elements that made his life successful was the influence of women. "Behind every successful man, is a strong woman," his wife said. "That woman was his mother, she told him that he could do anything he wanted." Bagley bait employed more than 200 women because Mr. Bagley felt women can better handle a lure than men can. In 1965, Jim was inducted into the Fishing Hall of Fame, where he was givin the Dolphin Award, one of the highest awards in fishing. He went on to receive the Gold Cup of Industry Award in 1987 and the Pradco Award.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

In addtion to his wife, Vera, he is survived by his sons, James Bagley, Jr. of Orlando, FL and Dean Bagley of Winter Haven, FL; daughters, Kelly Willard of Nashville, TN, Fonda Randall of Lakeland, FL, and Dawn Kilgore of Oveido, FL; sister, Juanita King of Winter Haven, FL and four grandchildren.

Visitations were Tues, Feb 17, 2004 at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, Winter Haven and services were held at 10:30 am Weds the 18th at Hope Presbyterian Church, 2110 Cypress Gardens Blvd. Winter Haven, FL.
