COLUMBIA Marie Rippetoe Altman, 85, of Columbia, SC, formerly of Dillon, SC, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009, in National Health Care (NHC)- West Columbia.

Born March 14, 1924, in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late David Emmett Rippetoe and Marie Mapp Rippetoe. She was a graduate of Dillon High School and attended both Farmville College in Virginia and the University of South Carolina. Marie was formerly married to the late Donald Dixon Altman of Clio, SC, and the late Walter R. Berry of Minturn, SC. A lady of many talents, in addition to raising two daughters, she worked as an agent with Pilot Life Insurance, and then became a real estate broker working throughout the Pee Dee area. In 1969, she took over the helm of Rippetoe Canvas Products as owner and operator of the business until closing its doors in 2001 at the age of 78. In addition, Marie also found time to participate in charitable and civic duties. In 1994, she served one and a half terms on Dillon City Council. She also volunteered at Pines Nursing Home in Dillon for 19 years and most recently volunteered at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia.

Survivors include two daughters: Anna Marie Altman Rodgers, Columbia, SC, Vickie Altman Williams, Jacksonville, FL; granddaughters: Tara Clark (Kraig), Laura Beck (Brian), and Amy Ross; frandson, Josh Rodgers (Amy); great-grandchildren: Emily Rodgers, Olivia Clark, Brooke Rodgers and Samantha Rodgers.

A celebration of her life will be held at a memorial service on Friday, November 13 at 10:00 a.m. at Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church, Broad River Road, Columbia. Family and friends will be received following this service. On Saturday, November 14, family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, Dillon, SC. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery, Dillon, SC.

The family wishes to thank both NHC of West Columbia and Tri County Hospice for their caring and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Tri County Hospice, the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
