Henry Erskine Bonner, 82, of Moncks Corner, a retired Berkeley County Superintendent, died peacefully at the Village of the Summerville Presbyterian Home on Tuesday, July 3, 2007.

Mr. Bonner was born December 16, 1924 in the family home in McClellanville, SC. He was the son of Walter Morse Bonner and Edith Lofton Bonner. He graduated in Erskine College after serving in the US Army during World War II. He received his Master's of Education from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and advanced work at the University of South Carolina. Long and distinguished in public education as coach, teacher, principal, administrator and superintendent of schools in Berkeley County since 1959. He served nearly 30 years. He successfully lead the integration of the schools in the late 60's and 70's and the growth of the school district which doubled in size. He served as chairman of the Trident Teacher's College Board of Directors and state committee of the task force as well as being honored as Superintendent of the Year in 1983. In addition to his dedication to Berkeley County Schools and public education, he was one of the church pillars of the First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner. He served as deacon, elder, clerk of the session and chaired the committee to build the new sanctuary as well as chaired the 50th anniversary of the church. He was a proud Democrat and active in the state and local democratic committee. He loved his family, his sisters and his brothers, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a true Southern gentlemen. He has left an impact on thousands of students, teachers, staff, and administrators.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Smith Bonner of Moncks Corner; daughter, Paula Bonner and partner, Ann Schaffer, of Madison, Wisconsin; son, Hank Bonner and partner, Ed Heard, of Deland, FL; sister, Lillian Bonner Jamison of McClellanville; brother, Dr. Walter Bonner of McClellanville.
